Fifa expresses concern over Bangladesh official’s arrest

ZURICH: Fifa is “monitoring with concern” the situation in Bangladesh where its council member Mahfuza Akhter Kiron has been arrested for suggesting the country’s prime minister is neglecting football because she prefers cricket.

A member of the Asian Football Confederation’s executive and women’s committees, Kiron is currently in jail in Dhaka awaiting trial. This follows a recent television interview Kiron gave when she contrasted the state support that cricket and football receive in the cricket-mad country.

Her comments prompted local official Abul Hasan Chowdhury Prince to file a defamation claim on the basis that she had embarrassed the nation. In a statement to Press Association Sport, a spokesperson for world football’s governing body Fifa said: “We are monitoring this matter with concern and working closely with the AFC. We have requested further details about the situation of Ms. Mahfuza Akhter and are currently awaiting information from the Bangladesh Football Federation.”
