Going to the dentist during the pandemic? Keep this in mind!

  • September 12, 2020

The ongoing pandemic has altered many aspects of our day-to-day lives, especially access to healthcare with hospitals and clinics being hotbeds for the virulent disease. With the world acclimatising to a new normal slowly and gradually and opening up services with increased security measures, there are some areas that are still tricky to traverse.

One of these is dental services. While dentists are undertaking as many precautions as they can – from screening patients and keeping appointments in a day to a minimum to strict sanitation practices in the clinic – the risk still remains. But if you’re planning to go see your dentist sometime soon, then, as compiled from Pinkvilla, here are some things you need to keep in mind.

  1. Identify the severity of the need

The first thing you need to think about before making a visit to the dentist is if you can hold it out for a bit longer or not. If you think your procedure can be postponed without resulting in any permanent damages, then you should stay put.

  1. Dental procedures are changing

With viral transmission being through droplets you spray when you converse, cough or sneeze, and dental procedures that cause more of a spray being done in closed quarters, the practices are changing now. Many dentists are returning to manual tools for procedures like enamel cleanings to replace other instruments that may do the job quicker but produce more oral spray. You can expect your treatment to take longer than usual.

  1. Adjusting to the new normal

Even if you manage to get an in-person appointment, chances of it being similar to your earlier ones are less to none. All patients are required to follow necessary safety guidelines, such as wearing a mask when they are not being treated, frequent hand washing/sanitisation and maintaining social distancing.

Maintaining good dental hygiene eventually facilitates a better, healthier overall life; it means you stay safe from bad breath, gum diseases and tooth decay, etc. Even if you aren’t heading to the dentist soon, remember to regularly and vigorously brush and floss your teeth/enamel more than ever for better health!
