NAB arrests Maryam Nawaz

LAHORE:    The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Thursday said it has arrested Maryam Nawaz and Yousuf Abbas in Chaudhry Sugar Mills case.

A team of doctors would inspect the PML-N Vice President and her cousin before they are presented before an Accountability Court on Friday, it said.

According to the statement, the NAB would seek remand of the suspects in accordance with the law. 

Earlier, Geo News reported that the PML-N leader was taken  into custody for failing to appear before the anti-graft body.

According to the report, the NAB arrested her from Kot Lakhpat Jail where she had gone to visit her father.

The TV channel reported that Maryam Nawaz  was asked to appear before the NAB in connection with an inquiry related to Chaudhry Sugar Mills but she failed to show up.

She was shifted to the NAB office after being taken into custody. 

Reaction

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, who was present in the National Assembly session when the reports of Maryam Nawaz’s came in, condemned the arrest of the PML-N Vice president and staged walkout from the house.

He said the rulers were  subjecting their  opponents to  political vendetta when it was time to  condemn Narendra Modi.

Bilawal Bhutto said the  General Zia’s regime used to register cases against women but it has become a custom in  “Naya Pakistan too”.

PPP leader Asif Ali Zardari   also condemned arrest of Maryam Nawaz  and warned the government against such measures.

Meanwhile, PML-N workers gathered outside the Parliament House to protest the arrest of their leader.

A fight broke out between the PML-N and PTI workers when the PML-N activists interrupted the press conference of federal minister Murad Saeed following arrest of Maryam Nawaz.
