Pakistan sans Sarfraz, Shaheen depart for Australia ODI series

LAHORE: A truncated Pakistani team — missing skipper Sarfraz Ahmed and ace bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi among several others — were to depart for the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday for their one-day international series against Australia in Dubai, Geo News reported.

The five-match series begins on Friday Mar 22 in Sharjah. Six players from the squad that lost 2-3 to South Africa earlier this year have been rested, including skipper Sarfraz Ahmed ahead of the cricket World Cup at the end of May. Babar Azam, Fakhar Zaman, Hasan Ali, Shadab Khan and Shaheen Shah Afridi have also been rested in view of the upcoming World Cup, while Hussain Talat has been dropped.

Mohammad Hafeez was not considered as he is recovering from a thumb surgery. Shoaib Malik will lead the team in his absence.Rookie fast bowler Mohammad Hasnain, who impressed in the recently concluded Pakistan Super League with his raw pace, is in the squad. Three other uncapped players include Abid Ali, Mohammad Abbas and Saad Ali.

The 16-man squad includes Shoaib Malik (captain), Abid Ali, Faheem Ashraf, Haris Sohail, Imad Wasim, Imam-ul-Haq, Junaid Khan, Mohammad Abbas, Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Hasnain, Mohammad Rizwan (wicketkeeper), Saad Ali, Shan Masood, Umar Akmal, Usman Shinwari and Yasir Shah.

The first day-night ODI begins on Mar 22 in Sharjah. The next one takes place at the same venue on Mar 24. The third takes place in Abu Dhabi on the 27th. Two days later (Mar 29) the Dubai ODI’s begin. The next Dubai match takes place on Mar 31.—
