Despite voicing zero tolerance to corruption in the organisation as well as profession time after time, Pakistan Medical and Dental Council president Dr Shabir Lehri is himself facing the charge of being involved in corrupt practices.
Elected to the office in January 2016, he has however refused to step down though the national health services, regulations and coordination ministry, which oversees the regulator for medical education and practice in the country, has reportedly sought his resignation.
During a recent meeting, some PMDC executive committee members had accused Dr Lehri of being involved in corruption over the recognition of six medical colleges in January. And even the meeting was marred by rowdyism.
The PMDC’s nod to the colleges’ recognition has yet to be formalised due to the delay in the issuance of the notification on part of the health services ministry. Not only has Dr Lehri denied corruption charge but he has declined to leave office as well.
He told this scribe that some executive committee members had levelled corruption allegation against him without producing any evidence and therefore, he being an elected president of the PMDC won’t quit on a mere allegation.
The PMDC president said he had called a council meeting over the matter. He also insisted the members hostile to him were unhappy by his firm commitment to adherence to the rules on college recognition and PMDC exams.
