Rawalpindi :The stretch of Nullah Leh passing through New Katarian, Phagwari and other areas has been filled with heaps of solid waste that would prevent smooth flow of water and may cause flood in the adjoining localities in the monsoon.
There are a total of 11 streams and 454 drains that flow into the Nullah Leh but those that pass through residential areas often get clogged due to the garbage thrown by the people, ignoring the fact that it may cause problems in the upcoming rainy season.
Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) every year places banners along the streams asking people not to throw garbage and dump solid waste in the Nullah Leh to avoid flood during heavy rains. The Nullah Leh and its tributaries act as the major drainage system through which the rain water of Islamabad and Rawalpindi is discharged in the River Soan.
Wasa has prepared a comprehensive month-long plan that would include dredging and de-silting of Leh, cleaning of all sewerage network falling in WASA’s jurisdiction, inspection of machinery, equipment and constituting of monsoon response teams.
The low-lying areas need special attention of the concerned authorities as the effective and functional early warning system would help them cope with any untoward situation. These areas include Waris Khan, Glass Factory, Mukha Singh State, Dhoke Khaba, Umer Road, Nadeem Colony, Dhoke Elahi Bakhsh, Arya Mohallah, Phagwari, Dhoke Naju, New Katarian and Javed Colony.
