  • January 19, 2018

KARACHI: Angry protesters clashed with police in a demonstration on Friday, calling for sacking of SSP Rao Anwar over killing of Naqeeb ullah Mehsud in an alleged police counter.

According to our correspondent, hundreds of  protesters gathered at Sohrab Goth after Friday prayers, blocked Super Highway for traffic and chanted slogans against the Sindh police.

Participants of the protest demand that authorities sack Rao Anwar to carry out a transparent probe into the death of Naqeebullah Mehsud.

Rao Anwar insists that Naqeebullah was a member of terrorist network, a claim the deceased’ family dismissed as false.

Meanwhile, large numbers of police and Rangers personnel reached the scene and fired teargas shells to break up the protest.

One protester was badly injured after a teargas shell hit his head.

Meanwhile, thousands of vehicles were stuck on the highway for hours due to the protest.

One track of the highway was still suspended due to the clashes between the law enforcement agencies and demonstrators.

Speaking to SAMAA, Fixit head Alamgir Khan condemned the police action on the peaceful protesters.

“Our demand is to sack Rao Anwar, who is behind the fake shootouts,” he told SAMAA TV.

The Fixit campaigner also called upon protesters to remain peaceful.

SAMAA’s senior anchorperson Faisal Karim, who is on the spot, said that announcements were made from loud speakers that the protest was called off.

He said that protesters were still pelting police with stones. – SAMAA
