Medical practitioners urged to follow quality treatment
Rawalpindi : A seminar on Dengue Management Guidelines was organised by Punjab Healthcare Commission (PHC) and Mir Khalil-ur-Rahman Memorial Society (Jang Group of Newspapers) here on Wednesday at Pearl Continental Hotel.
The seminar was organised to raise the awareness among medical practitioners to follow the quality treatment regarding the dengue that becomes epidemic in summer. The seminar was hosted by MKRS Chairman Wasif Naagi. He said that Punjab Healthcare Commission (PHC) aims to improve the quality, safety and efficiency of healthcare service delivery for all Public and Private Healthcare Establishments (HCEs) including ‘Allopaths’, ‘Homeopaths’ and ‘Tibbs’ in the province of Punjab. The PHC is responsible for developing and enforcing Minimum Service Delivery Standards (MSDS) at all levels of healthcare, to improve the quality of healthcare services and foster a culture of Clinical Governance. All healthcare establishments are now required to implement MSDS to acquire a licence to deliver healthcare services in Punjab. Quacks are now being apprehended by PHC who are playing with the lives of people.
Punjab Healthcare Commission CEO Dr. Mohammad Ajmal Khan said that all the medical practitioners have shared their concerns and apprehensions before the seminar and all that they have suggested would be considered seriously.
This seminar is not for the commission but for the medical professionals who have the pain for the humanity. “Dengue is not a disease but an epidemic but if not taken care of timely can become fatal. It is strange to note that dengue over a period of time can change its nature and can change the way it attacks humans. We can proudly say that first time in SAARC countries, Pakistan has been able to form a standard for treatment. PHC has made standards for hospitals, clinics, diagnostic centres, dental clinics etc. Now these standards are being followed by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh government also,” he said.
Dr. Mohammad Ajmal said that now PHC is making standards for specialised laboratories like dialysis centres , hepatitis, ICU, CCU. “These facilities are still not available in the SAARC countries; we are the pioneers in this regard. After the establishment of PHC almost 8,000 people have been trained in homeopathy, and from March 30 dental care specialists would start their training. Three times we visit the health institution to ensure they are at par with the guidelines of our standards for acquiring licences. Since long we have not done anything to curb quackery in our country and we have never put it on our priority list. But now we have sealed the practice of almost 8,000 quacks and we fine them too. We can fine them up to Rs500,000. We are already working in four districts and now will exceed to nine districts to apprehend quacks. Unfortunately, our fellow practitioners back these quacks and let them sit on their seats and use their stamps,” he said.
Deputy Commissioner (Rawalpindi) Talat Mahmood Gondal said that over a period of time we are able to control the massive count of dengue and now this year we are fully prepared to handle the dengue in a better way. Since February, our sanitary patrols, equipment, medicines are fully prepared to handle the situation. Each year we are working for the betterment of this issue.
Rawalpindi Commissioner Nadeem Aslam said that it is good to know that what challenges, the medical practitioners are facing today. Dialogue is the only way to solve the issue and you cannot go on protest because it’s a matter of life and death for patients. “Wearing white coat is a responsibility and it is a noble profession and you have to give importance to the patient. Why dengue is changing its area, is a question for researchers to probe into. We should work more on preventive measures. If our district administrator goes to your clinic for survey then the medical practitioners should cooperate with them. We are lenient in taking stern action but you have to identify the quacks instead of backing them, because it’s a matter of precious lives,” he added.
Prof. Javed Akram Ex VC Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University PIMS Islamabad said that Dengue attacks many generations and it is prevalent in 127 countries worldwide. “Dengue is the most challenging disease. Diagnosis should be correct in Dengue otherwise fatalities can increase. We have to achieve zero mortalities in dengue. Fluid management is the main treatment in Dengue. In 2011, 900 people lost their lives because we could not diagnose it and not cure it. All over the world, a total of 25,000 people die because of dengue in a year. The statistics of dengue is different in Pakistan. Men are more vulnerable to dengue than women but in the world, dengue is a disease for children. In Pakistan, it’s the other way around, that means you need your own indigenous guidelines,” he said.
Dr. Asad Ali Member District Health Authority said we will fully cooperate with PHC so that the health sector of Pakistan is at par with international quality standards.
Dr. Manzoor Ahmed, Dr. Shaukat Qureshi and Dr. Sarfaraz Bashir all offered their full support to PHC and urged their capacity building on quality standards in health sector for better medical practices.
