Air tragedies have made people mourn in every corner of the world since 1908, when the first aviation-related death was recorded in the United States.

Following a peek into Al-Jazeera Television’s June 21, 2016 report and the November 1, 2015 edition of the BBC News, here follows a recap of some of the worst air crashes in civilian aviation across the world (excluding Pakistan) since the year 2010.

Year 2016:

Quite recently, a Colombian plane crash had killed 71 people, including most of Brazil’s club football team en route to a cup final in Colombia, sending shockwaves around the football world.

On July 31, there were no survivors after a hot-air balloon carrying at least 16 people had caught fire and crashed in the US state of Texas, according to local authorities.

The US Federal Aviation Administration also confirmed the crash, which occurred outside the city of Austin on a clear day.

On May 19, an Egypt Air plane accident had left 66 dead. The plane was en route from Paris to Cairo.

On March 20, at least 62 passengers and crew had died after a Fly Dubai plane crashed during an attempted landing in Russia.

In a statement published on twitter, the Dubai media office said 44 of the passengers were Russians, eight were Ukrainians, two were Indians and one was from Uzbekistan.

On February 24, rescue teams in Nepal had found the wreckage of a small passenger plane that had gone missing in a remote mountainous area with 23 people on board.

Year 2015:

On October 31st, an Airbus, operated by Russian airline, had crashed over central Sinai desert some 22 minutes after taking off from Sharm El Sheikh. All 224 people on board were killed.

On June 30, Indonesian Hercules C-130 military transport plane crashed
into a residential area of Medan. The army said all 122 people on board died, along with at least 19 on the ground.

March 24, a Germanwings Airbus A-320 airliner crashed into the French Alps, on a flight from Barcelona to Dusseldorf. All 148 people on board were feared dead.

Year 2014:

On December 28, an Air Asia flight from Surabaya in Indonesia to Singapore had gone missing over the Java Sea. The pilot radioed for permission to divert due to bad weather but no mayday alert was issued. There were 162 passengers and crew on board.

July 24, an Algerian Airline plane had disappeared over Mali amid poor weather near the border with Burkina Faso. The McDonnell Douglas MD-83 was operated by Spain’s Swift Air, and was heading from Ouagadougou to Algiers carrying 116 passengers – 51 of them French. All are thought to have died.

On July 23, at least 48 people died when a Taiwanese plane crashed into stormy seas during a short flight. It was carrying 54 passengers and four crew members to the island of Penghu.

On July 17, Malaysia Airlines flight MH-17 crashed near eastern Ukraine, killing all 298 people on board, 193 of them Dutch. Pro-Russian rebels were widely accused of shooting the plane down using a surface-to-air missile.

On March 8, a Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 (Kuala Lumpur-Beijing) had suddenly vanished from the radar. It was carrying 12 Malaysian crew members and 227 passengers from 15 nations.

On February 11, a military transport plane carrying 78 people crashed in a mountainous part of Algeria.

Year 2013:

On November 17, a Boeing had crashed on landing in Russia, killing all 50 people on board.

On October 16, some 49 people, including foreigners from 10 countries, had died when a Lao Airlines plane plunged into the Mekong River as it came in to land.

Year 2012:

On June 3, a Dana Air passenger plane with about 150 people on board crashed in a densely populated area of Nigeria’s largest city, Lagos.

Year 2011:

On July 26, some 78 people were killed when a Moroccan military C-130 Hercules crashed into a mountain in Morocco.

On July 8, a plane crash-landed in Congo, killing 74 of the 118 people on board.

On January 9, an Iran Air Boeing 727 had broken into pieces, killing 77 of the 100 people on board.

Year 2010:

On November 5, a plane crashed in central Cuba, killing all 68 people on board.

On May 22, an Air India Express Boeing 737 overshot a hilltop airport in Mangalore and rammed into a valley, bursting into flames and killing 158.

On May 12, an aircraft crashed while trying to land near Tripoli airport in Libya, killing more than 100 people.

On April 10, a plane carrying Polish President Lech Kaczynski crashed in Russia, killing more than 90 people on board.
