Today’s outlook: Nawaz to record statement in Al Azizia reference, earthquake jolts Peshawar

Here is some of the news we’re following today, Wednesday, from Pakistan and the rest of the world.
- Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif has been ordered to record his statement in Al Azizia reference. The cross-examination of the investigating officer in Flagship reference has yet to be completed. The Supreme Court’s deadline to wrap up the cases will end in four days. The accountability court has decided to ask for another extension.
- An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale jolted Peshawar and its adjoining areas early Wednesday. Tremors were also felt in other parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Mingora and Swat. The earthquake was 90km deep and its epicenter was traced to the Hindu Kush region.
- Pakistan women cricket team defeated Ireland by 38 runs in the omen’s World T20 with a 38-run loss to Pakistan. Captain Javeria Khan hit a brilliant 52-ball 74 not out as her side made 139-6 from their 20 overs. Ireland remain bottom of Group B after the defeat while Pakistan’s first win of the tournament keeps them third.
- The UN Security Council failed to agree on any action over the fight between Israel and the Hamas militant group in Gaza. Kuwaiti Ambassador Mansour Al-Otaibi told reporters after the closed consultations late Tuesday that “we were not able to find a solution to the situation in Gaza” because of divisions in the most powerful UN body.
- The weather has turned pleasant after light rains in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and Attock.
