Asad directs CDA to complete feasibility study of Chiniot, Shahdara dams

ISLAMABAD – Federal Minister for Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives Asad Umar has directed the Capital Development Authority to complete the feasibility study of Chiniot Dam and Shahdara Dam, which will increase the water supply to the Islamabad Capital Territory.

Federal Minister for Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives Asad Umar chaired a review meeting to provide clean drinking water to the citizens of Islamabad on Tuesday. 

The meeting was attended by Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on CDA Ali Nawaz Awan, MNA Raja Khurram Nawaz, Chairman CDA, and other senior officials. Briefing the meeting, CDA officials said that the repair of major transmission pipelines of Simli Dam has saved about 2 MGD of water. 

After 25 years, about 2 MGD supply was restored from Rawal Dam. 152 tube wells are operational from 2021. Planning and survey of 30 new tube wells have been completed and will be installed at various locations in Islamabad in the next few months.

It was further informed in the meeting that both Chiniot Dam and Shahdara dams to be constructed in the future would be able to supply a total of 26 MGD of water to the citizens of Islamabad in the future.

It was further informed that work has started on the underground water recharge under the agreement between the Pakistan Council of Research (PCRWR) and CDA.

Federal Minister Asad Umar directed CDA to start work on 30 tube wells to be installed in Islamabad on a fast track basis so that there would be no interruption in the supply of clean drinking water to the residents of Islamabad. He further directed to complete the feasibility study of Chiniot Dam and Shahdara Dam and expedite the work on underground water recharge under PCRWR.
