Contractor arrested after six labourers die in lift accident in Karachi’s Boat Basin
The death toll in a lift accident at a construction site in Karachi’s Boat Basin rose to six on Saturday. The police have arrested the contractor responsible for the construction site and say they are going to arrest the building’s owner.
Five labourers died on Saturday while one was critically injured after the lift they were using to move glass sheets crashed. The injured labourer died on Saturday at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre.
The lift they were in fell from the 11th floor of the 23-floor building. The police say the cables used to lift it were frayed and generally in poor condition. They also said that the lift only had the capacity to carry three people but six workers were in it at the time of the accident.
The building has now been sealed and a case registered on the government’s behalf against the building owner and contractor.
