CTD arrests 3 suspected terrorists involved in demanding extortion

Islamabad-The Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) of Islamabad police has rounded up three suspected members of banned outfit Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) for their alleged involvement in demanding extortion from leading educational institutions, cafeterias and dispatching threatening letters to blow up the Police Lines Headquarters and CTD office. 

The detained suspects have been identified as Bakhat Shireen, Jan Alam and Muhammad Ali against whom separate cases were registered against them, disclosed SSP CTD Jamil Zafar Malik at a presser on Tuesday.

“The suspected terrorists had demanded a total of Rs 300 million extortion by sending 10 letters to management of The Millennium School and College, Roots School System,” he said adding the terrorists also dispatched letters to the CTD officials hurling threats of blast them if they acted against the suspects. 

The SSP also revealed that one of the arrested militants Bakht Shireen is a former TTP commander from Swat. 

He said the militants were supported by their accomplices in Afghanistan and used to write letters from there. 

“In one of the letters, the TTP suspects had claimed of kidnapping son of former premier Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani in presence of scores of people. 

Besides, the CEO of leading educational institution Chaudhry Mushtaq was on our hit list,” SSP informed. 

Sensing the sensitivity of the issue, he said IGP Islamabad Qazi Jameel-ur-Rehman had directed DIG Operations Afzaal Ahmed Kausar to arrest the terrorists. He said CTD while using scientific methods of investigations and modern technology in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies traced the accused.
