Fawad Chaudhry thinks foreign dramas will ruin Pakistani productions

  • June 01, 2020

Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry is surprised at the fact that PTV is taking pride in airing a foreign TV show.

Taking to Twitter, he said PTV must focus on Pakistani productions otherwise foreign dramas will ruin the local industry. “It’s always cheap to import foreign dramas but this will have a devastating long-term impact on our own programming,” he said.

The minister later clarified that he was not referring to the Turkish epic on Ertugrul Ghazi that has been airing on state television as per the prime minister’s request since the beginning of ramazan. The show has been dubbed into Urdu and has developed a large fan base in the country. He added that Ertugrul was a great show.

Talking to SAMAA TV, Chaudhry said that it was time to focus on our actors and the future of the industry.

“PTV should focus on local content and promote our stars,” he said, adding that he hoped the federal information minister would take notice of what was going on.

Senator Faisal Javed Khan responded to Chaudhry and said that great productions like Etrugrul will help Pakistan’s television industry.

“We should show some amazing work that has already been produced. Presenting Islamic history, culture, faith. also this should be bilateral: exporting our content abroad. It’s a win win trade,” he said.

According to the senator, it was important to work on “our substance and content”. “Our drama industry is one of the best in the world in terms of talent, productions, direction etc. With great substance we can penetrate major markets across the globe,” he added.
