  • March 21, 2019

Five mosques were attacked in Birmingham in overnight strikes on Thursday, reported BBC.

The police said that they received reports of a man smashing the windows of a mosque on Birchfield Road with a sledgehammer.

They received similar complaints from Erdington, Aston, Perry Barr and Albert Road.

Home Secretary Sajid Javed said that the attacks were “deeply concerning and distressing”.

He added, “Hateful behaviour has absolutely no place in our society [and] will never be accepted.”

Councillor Majid Mahmood tweeted a video of one of the mosques too.

Islam is a religion of peace, said the imam of one of the mosques. “The people who are behind these attacks should choose the path of peace too.”

He remarked that security around the mosque has been put on high alert for Friday prayers on March 22.

The attack comes just a week after a gunman shot dead 50 people when he opened fire in two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand.
