JKT probe: Over 2 dozen PTI MPs write to PM for meeting

  • April 15, 2021

ISLAMABAD – Over two dozen estranged lawmakers of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) have written to Prime Minister Imran Khan seeking meeting with him to clarify their position besides demanding “impartial” investigations against party leader Jahangir Khan Tareen in the sugar scam.

The letter signed by 25 lawmakers of the ruling party from Punjab including six members of the National Assembly (MNAs) and 19 members of Punjab Assembly. Malik Nauman Ahmed Langrial is also among the MPAs who is a provincial minister.

These lawmakers had earlier openly come out for the support of Tareen who is facing allegations of alleged money laundering and fraud in the sugar scandal involving sky rocketing prices of sweetener in the country.

The lawmakers in the letter said that they earlier had met in Lahore only to “strengthen” the party as Jahangir Taren “is a party asset and his services for PTI are unforgettable.”

“We believe that his name and reputation is being targeted in the name of investigation. We believe that this is prejudiced and agenda driven activity by people who are biased against Mr Tareen,” the letter said. The lawmakers said that they believed that such people were misleading PM and “have poisoned” him against Tareen.

The lawmakers made it clear that they are not opposed to any investigation. “We just want it done fairly. We request you that a new investigation team be formed that is unbiased and not prejudiced.”

“We request time with Prime Minister to explain our feeling and point of view in person,” the letter concluded.

The MNAs who have signed the letter include Raja Riaz Ahmed, Khawaja Sheraz Mehmood, Syed Sami Ul Hassan Gillani, Riaz Mehmood Mazari, Mubeen Alam Anwar and Javaid Iqbal Warraich. The prominent MPAs who are also advisers to CM Punjab are Abdul Hayee Dasti, Ameer Muhammad Khan and Rafaqat Gilani.
