The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has issued directives to withdraw a notification by the education department declaring abaya or chadar a must for students of all the government-run schools for girls in the province, a provincial minister said late Monday.
All the heads of government-run girls schools were directed to “instruct all the students to use Gown/Abaya or Chadar to veil/conceal/cover up”, according to the notification.
The decision was made “in order to protect them from any unethical incident”, it said.
However, KP Information Minister Shaukat Yousafzai said the provincial government has instructed the officials, who had issued the notification, to withdraw it.
“Covering yourself is a religious obligation and part of the culture, but it cannot be implemented forcefully,” the minister said, in his statement issued to the media.
Earlier, Adviser to KP CM on Education Ziaullah Bangash had backed the decision saying it was made keeping in view the traditions and religious values.
“Decisions will have to be made in the province and the country in accordance with the Islamic values,” Bangash had said.
