KARACHI: Pakistani model and actress Komal Aziz said on Saturday that if anything were to happen to her or any of her family members, her landlord, who she identified as Jahanzaib Shahani, would be responsible for it.
Speaking to www.samaa.tv, Komal said that her life was in danger since the landlord had pulled guns on her and her family members during an earlier altercation.
“An investigating officer has been assigned to us ever since media ran the news regarding the assault on us,” she said. “The police are actively looking for him,” she added.
The dispute arose according to Komal when she wanted to vacate the flats after spending 11 months there and demanded her deposit money back. However, her landlord refused to return her deposit money which amounted to Rs. 600,000 and also insisted she pay the CBC bills as well.
“The CBC bills are not the concern of the tenant—rather they should be paid by the property owner,” she said. “However, he had defaulted on those as well to the extent that they amounted to more than Rs. 100,000,” she added.
According to the model, her landlord was also a defaulter when it came to monthly maintenance payments of Florida Homes apartments and owed the building Rs 528,000 in total. Shahani insisted she pay the arrears pertaining to maintenance payments as well, to which Komal did not agree.
“When I did not pay the maintenance dues which had accrued as a result of him being a defaulter, he cut the electricity line from my meter to disrupt our power supply,” she said.
Both parties came to a settlement initially when police intervened after their first altercation. According to the terms agreed, Komal and her family agreed to vacate the flat in a month’s time in exchange for the deposit money, which the landlord agreed to pay to her.
On Wednesday when she was to move out of the flat, Shahani’s younger brother went back on his word regarding the payment of the deposit money and insisted Komal’s family pay the CBC bills.
The actress stated that things got out of hand when Shahani’s brother lost his temper and started beating her sister as well as her uncle, who was also there to prevent any untoward situation.
Komal claimed that when police arrived on the scene, the suspect had fled with his entire family. Police are on the lookout for him but are yet to find him. Komal has filed an FIR report against her landlord, who is on the run with his family.
“They have been actively looking for him but have still not found the culprit,” she said.
Landlord denies accusations, claims he was not involved in torture
According to a local report, Komal’s landlord denied the accusations she leveled at him.
“There are around 450 flats in the building and everyone knows that the family is a defaulter, and did not pay rent for the last few months,” he was quoted as saying by The Express Tribune.
Shahani’s secretary stated that the tenants were unwilling to pay their rent hence he had demanded they vacate the premises.
“No one has threatened her,” he said. “They were unwilling to pay rent on time so we asked them to leave the apartment.”
