LHC orders Punjab govt to release Najfi Commission report on Model Town tragedy
LAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Tuesday ordered the Punjab government to release the inquiry report on the Model Town tragedy within a month.
At least 14 people were killed and 90 others injured in clashes between the police and workers of the Pakistan Awami Tehreek as authorities moved to remove encroachments in front of Dr Tahirul Qadriâs house in Model Town on June 17, 2014.
An inquiry panel known as Justice Baqar Najfi Commission was tasked with  probing the incident.
The commission had report had also recorded statements of Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Law Minister Rana Sanaullah.Â
Later, LHCâs Justice Mazahir Ali Akbar Naqvi had ordered the government to make the report public after families of the victims of the tragedy moved an application to disclose the report.
The LHC had asked the Punjab government to release the report to fulfill the requirements of justice.
The Punjab government, however, moved an intra court appeal against the courtâs decision before a full bench of the high court which reserved the verdict on November 24.
A three member full bench today announced the verdict, asking the government to provide the copies of the inquiry report to the victim families.
The government is likely to move the Supreme Court against the Lahore High Court decision.
