Nawaz Sharif reaches Kot Lakhpat jail

Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif has reached Kot Lakhpat jail after his six-week bail on medical grounds expired on Tuesday.

“I am thankful to my lovely workers… I thank Zinda dilan-e-Lahore who accompanied me,” Mr Sharif said in a video message shared by his daughter on Twitter.

“The dark night of injustice will end,” he said. “I know they understand why I am being punished,” the former prime minister said about his supporters.

Maryam Nawaz Sharif in another tweet said that it took them four hours to reach Kot Lakhpat jail from Raiwind which is hardly 30 minutes away. “Thank you Lahore ,” she said.

His nephew, Hamza Shehbaz, drove him to jail while his daughter Maryam Nawaz also accompanied him.

A large number of PML-N workers and leaders gathered outside his Jati Umra residence and accompanied their leader to the jail.

Maryam Nawaz, who was made the party’s vice president a few days ago, did not address the rally.

Sharif was granted six weeks of bail to get medical treatment, which expired tonight, May 7.

The three-time former premier was jailed at Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat Jail after an accountability court sentenced him to seven years after convicting him in the Al-Azizia case.

It is very difficult for a daughter to drop her father to the prison and for a father to go to the jail holding his daughter’s hand, Maryam tweeted Monday night. She said that she will still go because their mission is much bigger than the relationship between a father and his daughter.
