Pakistan summons Indian envoy over deadly ceasefire violation

  • July 08, 2017

Two people, including a girl, were martyred and three other civilians injured on Saturday morning when Indian troops resorted to unprovoked firing along the LoC near Chirikot and Satwal sectors.

According to an Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) statement, belligerent Indian forces used heavy mortar guns to fire upon civilian dwellings near Satwal and Chirikot sectors. Pakistan Army befittingly responded to the indiscriminate firing.

Pakistan has lodged a strong protest with India and summoned Indian Deputy High Commissioner J.P. Singh to the foreign office.

“Deliberate targeting of civilians is deplorable and contrary to human dignity and international human rights and humanitarian laws,” the foreign office said in a statement.

It urged that the UN Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan should be permitted to play its mandated role as per the UN Security Council resolutions.

Last month, Pakistan Army responded to continued ceasefire violations by Indian forces along the LoC, killing five Indian soldiers and wounding several more in the Tatta Pani sector near Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

According to the military’s media wing, Pakistan troops had also destroyed several Indian army bunkers while retaliating to the unprovoked firing which took place a day after the United Nations expressed concern over escalating tensions between the two nuclear-armed rivals.

Indian forces have killed at least five civilians and wounded another 30 on the Pakistani side of the LoC in more than 400 ceasefire violations since the year began, ISPR data shows.
