  • August 19, 2021

ISLAMABAD – The Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU) Joint Action Committee (JAC) on Wednesday foiled an attempt of illegal construction on the university land by encroachers and demanded from the government to evacuate the entire 1709 acre area of the institution.

The JAC of the university comprising QAU alumni association, Academic Staff Association (ASA) and employees of the university releasing details to media informed that an attempt of land grabbing was intercepted timely, and the construction work was stopped on the university land.

The JAC was formed after the District Administration launched an anti-encroachment operation to vacate the university land from grabbers. The JAC was mandated to talk to alleged illegal settlers in the university and search a way out along with the Capital Development Authority (CDA) to vacate the encroached university land.

The JAC statement said that the entire 1709 acres of land of the university should be evacuated from the land grabbers and handed over to the university.

“The land grabbing mafia of Quaid-e-Azam University is once again in full swing. Despite the clear orders of the Islamabad High Court, an influential and well-known political figure of Islamabad has tried to seize the land of Quaid-e-Azam University,” said JAC.

It said that the work has been stopped immediately due to the timely action of the university administration while the workers there have been warned that the university administration has the right to take legal action if such action is taken in future.

The JAC called an emergency meeting and it was demanded that the entire 1709 acres of land of the university be relinquished from the encroachers. The meeting expressed regret over the fact that illegal construction work was carried out twice on the same land where the earlier encroachments were demolished.

There are clear orders, and the matter is under the notice of the federal government and other concerned agencies.

All the organizations of the Joint Action Committee demanded an immediate solution to the issue, saying that security issues were increasing due to the occupation mafia and encroachments, while several projects of the university were also being severely affected.

On this occasion, it was stated that the Quaid-e-Azam University would protect the land of the university along with the administration of the university and would not allow even an inch of land to be encroached upon.

Meanwhile, the city administration led by Assistant Commissioner (AC) Anil Saeed and Secretariat police station SHO Khurram reached the location and reviewed the security situation there.

The city administration said that no illegal construction is allowed on the QAU land until demarcation is done on the land following the court orders. The administration also noted the report and asked the university administration to inform the city administration if any illegal activity is attempted.

The university administration had also briefed the National Assembly body on Federal Education and Professional Training about the retrieval of QAU land.

Dr. Raja Qaiser Ahmed, Registrar, QAU briefed the members of the committee regarding the longstanding issue. He said an area of 1709 acres, 4 kanals and 12 marlas was acquired by CDA in 1967-72 for QAU.

Total payment of this land was made by the university to CDA, but on-ground demarcation and vacant position of the land was not given by CDA. Despite repeated requests of QAU, on-ground demarcation and vacant possession of the land was not given by CDA to the university. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ali, Vice Chancellor, QAU had also requested the parliamentary committee to direct the concerned departments for the  joint verification of the fresh on-ground demarcation of the university land carried out by Survey of Pakistan and complete the deficient university land. Senior faculty members and staff of the university also attended the meeting.
