World Diabetes Day celebrated

Quaid-e-Azam International Hospital celebrated world diabetes day, an international event prompted by an acute need to raise awareness of the silent epidemic, says a press release.

The theme of World Diabetes Day 2016 is Eyes on Diabetes. The year’s activities and materials will focus on promoting the importance of screening to ensure early diagnosis of type 2 diabetes and treatment to reduce the risk of serious complications.

The longer a person lives with diabetes the higher is his/her risk for developing crippling complications, such as kidney disease, nerve damage, blindness, amputation of extremities, heart disease and stroke, among other devastating ailments.

Dr. Syed Zubair Hussain, consultant endocrinologist discussed the various aspects of diabetes. He said that more than 387 million people living with diabetes in the world and Pakistan will be the 10th largest country with diabetic population by 2035. He said that up to 80% of type-2 diabetes can be preventable by adopting a healthy diet and increasing physical activity. He discussed the role of healthy eating, exercise and pharmacological treatment in diabetes. He discussed the complications of diabetes and measures to reduce the complication. He also clarifies different myths about Diabetes.
