New Zealand beat Pakistan by 8 wickets in 1st Test

  • December 01, 2016

The second and final Test starts in Hamilton on Friday with New Zealand searching for the first series win over Pakistan in 31 years.

Scores: Pakistan 133 and 171. New Zealand 200 and 108-2.

Set a target of 105 in the low-scoring Test, New Zealand were set to wrap up the match inside three days of play after day one was washed out.

Debutant Jeet Raval, who top scored in the first innings with 55, was not out 16 with captain Kane Williamson on 31 as New Zealand sought a confidence boosting win after being whitewashed 3-0 in India last month.

Opener Tom Latham was the man out, following his solitary run in the first innings with nine in the second and both times falling to Mohammad Amir.

Pakistan resumed their second innings at 129 for 7 and added a further 42 runs as they kept New Zealand at bay for nearly 13 overs on Sunday.

Sohail Khan posted a Test-best 40 as he and Asad Shafiq (17) showed gritty resistance at the start of the day.

But their 53-run stand for the eighth wicket came to an end when Sohail half-heartedly pulled a short-pitched Southee delivery to Colin de Grandhomme at backward square.

The catch capped a fine all-round debut after de Grandhomme starred with 6 for 41 in Pakistan´s first innings and then posting the third-highest score in New Zealand´s first innings with 29.

Neil Wagner produced the best bowlin figures in Pakistan´s second innings with three for 34. Trent Boult, who leaked 19 runs in two overs on Sunday, took three for 37 while Southee finished with three for 53.
