Indian footballer Gourav Mukhi has been suspended for six months for committing age fraud, the Daily Mail has reported.

The Jamshedpur FC striker appeared to have made history when he became the youngest goal-scorer in Indian Super League at the age of 16 by scoring an equaliser in a 2-2 draw with Bengaluru FC.

But the player was later exposed as a fraud after league documents revealed that he is actually 28 years old.

His club registration was revoked and a six-month suspension was put in place with immediate effect after he failed to prove his age.

A statement by All India Football Federation statement read, “All India Football Federation (AIFF) Disciplinary Committee has imposed a six-month suspension on Jamshedpur FC player Gourav Mukhi with immediate effect. The AIFF Disciplinary Committee found the player Gourav Mukhi guilty on the basis of the evidence presented by him, his admissions and the statements of Manager of U-16 AIFF academy in 2015.”

The disciplinary committee observed that the existing registration of Gourav Mukhi in the Central Registration System (CRS) and Competition Management System (CMS) was cancelled with immediate effect.

This is not Mukhi’s first offence, with the player having been caught for providing false information regarding his age in 2015 as well.
