KARACHI: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), while showing its political power in Karachi, rejected results of 2017 population census due to alleged discrepancies, and called for holding of fresh census, Samaa reported Sunday.
The demand was made at a protest rally at Liaqatabad Number 10 where thousands of MQM supporters joined their leadership.
Rejecting results of the census, MQM-P leader Farooq Sattar demanded a fresh census to determine the actual population of Karachi, saying the results of 2017 census were rigged to hide real population of the mega city.
“On the basis of these results, employment opportunities and resources for the people of Sindh, especially the Mohajir community, will be reduced,” he said.
The MQM leader said his party would not vote in legislation for fresh delimitation which is being made on the grounds of 2017 census.
The census results have placed the population of Karachi at around 15 million people, however, the “figure of 15 million only depicts the female population of the city,” Sattar quipped.
He demanded of the government to re-conduct the census.
“Today they have reduced our population, tomorrow they will reduce our water quota as well… Through the rigged results of the census, names of eight million MQM voters have been erased,” he said.
He warned that if their demands regarding census were not met, they will demand resources and seats on the basis of revenue generated in Karachi. – Samaa
