NIH launches centre for disease control

ISLAMABAD – The National Institutes of Health (NIH) on Tuesday organized a launching ceremony of CDC Pakistan to enhance the country’s capacity in the field of national public health initiative. Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Health Dr. Faisal Sultan along with Prof. Nausherwan Khan Burki, Chairman Health Task Force Pakistan and Prof Zulfiqar A. Bhutta, Chairman BoG of NIH and BoG members inaugurated the newly established centre at NIH.

The CDC Pakistan has been established at NIH with the aim to enhance the capacity of the public health system in coordination, disease detection, surveillance, response, preparedness and emergency management of public health events.

At this occasion, Dr. Faisal Sultan appreciated the momentous progress of NIH and its role in the public health system of Pakistan. He said that the new initiative will contribute to improve the ability of the country to prevent, detect, and respond to infectious disease outbreaks in a systematic manner and also enhance national health safety and security.

Speaking on occasion, Maj Gen Professor Aamer Ikram, Executive Director, NIH said, the centre will improve the public health system capacity for early detection of events having public health significance for timely response using modern methods and techniques.
